Breaking diet rules to live simply healthy
Hi, my name is Karina and I am a Registered Dietitian. I was a young high school student when I recognized the importance of nutrition. After my mom was diagnosed with stage four cancer, I was driven to understand the details of her treatment plan. She received many rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, which led her to lose a significant amount of weight. With the help of western medicine, her medical team, and family and friends who would take turns dropping off home-cooked meals, she was able to regain her strength and energy. I am happy to say that after 14 years since her diagnosis, my mom is thriving and is in good health.
This experience taught me how important nutrition can be for our bodies. I view food from a different lens - it gives us nourishment, energy, and the ability to overcome serious chronic illnesses. Nowadays it seems as if dieting has consumed our way of living - labeling food as good or bad, obsessively tracking our calories and scheduling cheat days. It is disheartening to see the magnitude of misconstrued nutrition information. Diet culture leads us to believe that food is the enemy, but I’m here to teach you otherwise!
Sometimes the hardest part about navigating a healthy lifestyle is not knowing where to start, figuring out what to cook, and struggling to understand nutrition information. I aim to make this whole process easier by teaching you how to become an intuitive eater. I will teach you how to nourish your body by using evidenced-based nutrition principles and a personalized approach to help you live your best life and not feel stressed around food.
I believe food plays a significant role in our well-being; it brings people together and serves as a platform for creativity. I focus on how to keep things simple when it comes to nutrition so that you can find the joy in eating, without dieting! As a dietitian, I use a non-diet and holistic approach to health by addressing the whole person- physically, mentally, and emotionally. I look at different factors like stress, sleep, exercise, lifestyle, etc. to better understand your eating behaviors. My goal is to guide you through this process and to empower you to take ownership of your well-being.
